Upcoming Assassin’s Creed Titles May Feature Multiple Heroes, According to AC Shadows Developer

Ubisoft hasn’t revealed its roadmap for upcoming Assassin’s Creed titles beyond Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but the game’s dual-protagonist approach featuring Yasuke and Naoe might pave the way for more character options in the future. “The takeaway for us is that we could explore more dual-protagonist games down the line—if there’s a solid narrative and setting to support it,” shared Simon Lemay-Comtois, the associate director of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, in a conversation with an outlet. While Yasuke and Naoe are not the first dual protagonists in the series—Jacob and Evie from Assassin’s Creed Syndicate hold that title—Shadows presents a more distinct contrast between its heroes. Yasuke excels in physical combat, while Naoe specializes in stealth. Lemay-Comtois acknowledged the mixed reactions to Yasuke’s character, noting, “Dual protagonists can create unexpected divisions. It’s not just about preferring one character over the other; some players simply connect with one more than the other. This was evident with Evie and Jacob, but with Naoe and Yasuke, the divide feels even sharper. We anticipated this, but it can split our fan base.” Looking ahead, Lemay-Comtois highlighted parkour as an area of renewed focus, admitting it hasn’t been a priority in previous titles. “We’re working to address that in the post-launch phase of Shadows and emphasize internally that ‘parkour matters.’ We want to elevate parkour in our gameplay.” He also confirmed that Shadows will not receive a second DLC expansion, unlike many of its predecessors. Ubisoft’s CEO mentioned that Shadows faced delays due to community feedback. Interestingly, the company has reported that Shadows and the broader Assassin’s Creed catalog performed exceptionally well in the last fiscal quarter. Currently, players of Assassin’s Creed Shadows can enjoy a free mission inspired by Attack on Titan, available until December 22.
