Upcoming Dragon Ball Game Set for 2027 to Showcase Akira Toriyama’s Character Designs, Potentially a New Entry in the Xenoverse Series
A brand new Dragon Ball game has been announced during the series’ 40th anniversary celebration, featuring a character designed by the legendary Akira Toriyama, who sadly passed away in 2024.
At the Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri event this past weekend, fans were treated to a wealth of exciting news. The Dragon Ball Super anime will continue with the Galactic Patrol arc, and the first arc, which reimagined the 2013 film Battle of Gods, is set to be remade as Dragon Ball Super: Beerus. However, the standout announcement is undoubtedly the new game slated for release in 2027.
The teaser for the project, currently titled “New Game Project Age 1000,” showcased a new character in a Capsule Corp uniform battling robots in a training simulation before transforming into a Super Saiyan. This character, designed by the late Toriyama, was highlighted in a news post that mentioned “characters” as part of his contributions, suggesting there may be more of his work featured in the game.
Age 1000 is significant as it aligns with the timeline of the MMO Dragon Ball Online, while the Dragon Ball Xenoverse series, which draws heavily from Dragon Ball Online, is set in the 800s. Given the similar timeframes, there’s speculation that this could be Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3. More details are expected to be revealed at the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour 2026 event in April, where fans hope to get confirmation.
In the meantime, Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero has announced a new wave of DLC characters arriving this year, including Great Demon King Piccolo, Super Android 17, Tao Pai Pai, and Ciampa, as teased in a recent trailer.
Toriyama’s influence also extends to the Dragon Quest series, with Dragon Quest 12 having been revealed back in 2021. While series creator Yuji Horii hasn’t explicitly confirmed Toriyama’s involvement in the game, he expressed a desire for it to honor the legacies of both Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama, who passed away in 2021. Given that the 2027 title features Toriyama’s designs, there’s a strong possibility that the manga icon contributed to the upcoming RPG, though nothing is officially confirmed yet.
If you’re looking to get up to speed before Age 1000 drops, here’s how to watch Dragon Ball in order.
