Upcoming Pokémon game transforms the series’ least favorite monster type.

Every Pokémon type has its own fanbase, but bug-types often sit at the bottom of the popularity chart. No shade to the dedicated Bug Catchers out there, but a category based on insects—creatures that many people find creepy or unappealing—wasn’t likely to become a community favorite. With numerous weaknesses to contend with, bug-types have long been an overlooked segment of the Pokémon world.

Enter Pokémon Bug Lime, a fresh take on the classic Pokémon FireRed that aims to revitalize the least favored type in the franchise. This ROM hack is entirely centered around bug-types, featuring insect-themed starters and a roster of 94 bug Pokémon from across the series, enhanced by several monsters reclassified as bugs. Many familiar bug-types have been rebalanced with new elemental combinations, stats, movesets, and even new evolution methods, all designed to elevate this underappreciated group.

In this game, all NPCs and gym leaders utilize bug-type Pokémon. Thanks to dual typing, gym leaders can still maintain their original elemental themes while embracing the bug focus. Although rooted in an older Pokémon version, the hack integrates mechanics from newer generations, such as shiny charms, along with its own quality-of-life upgrades. For instance, TMs are now unlimited, and players can delete HMs. The Experience Share item is also available midway through the game instead of at the end. Players will choose their starter from Tarountula, Surskit, and Sizzlipede.

“The goal is to make all Bug-Types enjoyable to use, rather than focusing on ‘realistic’ changes,” creator spearmintz shared in a Pokémon forum.

Ranked from best to very best, like no one ever was.
