Upcoming Professor Layton Game Sets Release Date After Years of Anticipation
On Wednesday, the highly anticipated puzzle-adventure game, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, finally received a release date set for 2026 after a year-long delay. Fans had been growing increasingly anxious due to the lack of updates, fearing another postponement. However, a trailer released in April confirmed that the 2026 timeline was still intact. Now, after months of waiting, the official release date was revealed during September’s Nintendo Direct.
Here’s what we know about the game:
Professor Layton and his loyal sidekick Luke are back in this new chapter of the beloved puzzle-solving series, which is set during the early days of the industrial revolution. The adventure kicks off when the professor receives a letter from Luke, prompting him to journey to Steam Bison, a rapidly evolving American town beset by strange occurrences.
This marks the first mainline entry in the series since 2013’s Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, which concluded the Layton prequel trilogy. Since then, there have been several spin-offs and crossovers, including Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, and Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy. Now, the professor is set to embark on a new adventure with New World of Steam.
Level-5 first announced Professor Layton and the New World of Steam back in 2023, initially aiming for a 2024 release. Although it’s now slated for a later date than fans had hoped, the game is officially set to launch on Thursday, December 10, 2026. In addition to being showcased during a Nintendo Direct, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will also be available on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Windows PC via Steam.
