Upcoming Star Trek Film Blends Sci-Fi with Naval Tension, Say Writers
After a long wait of over ten years, it looks like a new Star Trek film is finally on the horizon. While die-hard fans have heard similar news in the past, the directors of the only confirmed Star Trek movie in development have recently shared some intriguing insights about their project. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the duo behind the upcoming film, discussed their inspirations in a recent interview.
They specifically mentioned *Training Day* and *Crimson Tide* as key influences for their vision.
For those who might not be familiar, *Training Day* features Ethan Hawke as a rookie LAPD narcotics officer learning the ropes from the morally ambiguous detective Alonzo Harris, portrayed by Denzel Washington. Meanwhile, *Crimson Tide* is a tense thriller about a U.S. nuclear submarine confronting a Russian ultranationalist group that threatens to launch nuclear weapons against the U.S. and Japan, also starring Washington.
Daley explained how the influence of *Training Day* will manifest in their film, focusing on some of the “bad apples” within Starfleet. “It’s really a look at the institution of Starfleet and any long-standing institution, and what that entails,” he noted. “The portrayal of Starfleet and its personnel has often been idealized, but this script acknowledges that there are indeed some bad apples that can significantly impact the institution and its values.”
Previous Star Trek films have explored the theme of flawed Starfleet members with varying degrees of success, including *Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country*, *Star Trek: Insurrection*, and *Star Trek Into Darkness*. However, Daley and Goldstein are bringing a fresh perspective to the franchise.
“It unfolds almost in real time, offering a new take on what a Star Trek movie can be while staying true to its core principles,” Daley shared.
They also emphasized that the film will introduce entirely new characters to the Star Trek universe. “We don’t want to lean too heavily on nostalgia,” Goldstein stated. “Our goal is to create a fantastic movie that exists within a world some people know and others will discover. With a bit of luck, we hope to kickstart a new franchise.”
While the film is still in the development phase, there’s plenty of reason for optimism given Daley and Goldstein’s recent projects. The pair previously co-directed and co-wrote the surprisingly enjoyable *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves*, featuring former James T. Kirk actor Chris Pine. They also directed the action-comedy *Game Night*, and their latest release, *Mayday*, received positive feedback.
Without this new film, the Star Trek franchise might face a prolonged hiatus. Aside from *Star Trek: Strange New Worlds* and *Starfleet Academy*, both of which are set to conclude after their next seasons, there are currently no new TV series in the pipeline. Here’s hoping this movie revitalizes the franchise and brings it back into the spotlight.
To boldly go where the series has never gone before!
