Upcoming Star Wars Movies and TV Shows Set for 2027 and Beyond
2026 is shaping up to be a monumental year for Star Wars. While 2025 had its share of excitement with the thrilling finales of Andor and Skeleton Crew, along with the return of Star Wars: Visions for a third season, it was relatively quiet for the franchise overall. Following the mixed reception of Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 and Solo: A Star Wars Story the previous year, most new Star Wars content has been focused on TV series, including live-action hits like The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Acolyte, and Ahsoka, as well as animated series like The Bad Batch. However, this year and into 2027, Star Wars is making its grand return to theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, alongside Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter. Fans can also look forward to more TV content, including the animated series Maul: Shadow Lord and Visions’ Ninth Jedi, rounding out Lucasfilm’s offerings for 2026.
In recent years, Lucasfilm has shared various plans for the future of the Star Wars universe, including updates on upcoming projects and some confirmed release dates. However, several films have been canceled or put on hold, such as Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy and Kevin Feige’s project, while others, like Donald Glover’s elusive Lando film, have faced delays. One intriguing canceled project that came to light only through Adam Driver’s leak was The Hunt for Ben Solo.
To keep you in the loop about what’s coming, we’ve compiled a comprehensive calendar of upcoming Star Wars releases. Here’s what to expect, where to catch them, and their release dates. And if you’re feeling nostalgic, it might be a great time to revisit the entire Star Wars saga. Here’s the best order to watch existing Star Wars projects.
Release date: Jan. 20, 2027, on Disney Plus
Season 2 of Ahsoka will continue right where the first season left off, featuring two intertwining storylines. The first follows Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) as they evade Shin (Ivanna Sakhno) on Peridea. Rory McCann will step in for the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, who plays a significant role in this arc. The second storyline centers on Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) as he launches an assault on the nascent New Republic. Returning cast members include Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla.
Ahsoka’s second season will also delve into the arrival of the Mortis Gods, presenting a challenging narrative for Lucasfilm to adapt.
Release date: Feb. 19, 2027, in movie theaters
If you’ve ever wished to experience Star Wars: A New Hope as audiences did back in 1977, you’re in luck. Lucasfilm has announced that the original Star Wars will be screened in theaters “everywhere” for a “limited time.” This includes 70 mm IMAX showings of George Lucas’ iconic sci-fi adventure.
And they mean the original film: no more Greedo shooting first, no CGI Jabba the Hutt, and no digital Dewbacks. When you head to theaters in February 2027, it’ll feel like a trip back to 1977.
Release date: May 28, 2027, in movie theaters
Shawn Levy, known for directing Deadpool & Wolverine and Free Guy, is helming a new Star Wars film set after the sequel trilogy. The movie boasts a star-studded cast, including Ryan Gosling, whose character details remain under wraps. Joining him are Matt Smith, who will portray the villain in Starfighter, along with Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.
Claudio Miranda, the director of photography for Top Gun: Maverick, will bring his expertise to the film, enhancing the visuals and aerial combat sequences in this galaxy far, far away.
Levy expressed his excitement about developing a new Star Wars film, stating, “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off is the thrill of a lifetime.”
Release date: TBA
Following a successful first season of Darth Maul’s animated series, Lucasfilm is set to bring back the ex-Sith Lord for a second season of Maul: Shadow Lord in 2027.
Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s planned Star Wars film will take place 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, set in a new era known as the New Jedi Order, focusing on Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) as she attempts to rebuild the Jedi Order.
Initially referred to as “Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie,” it was reported in March 2023 that he had been replaced by screenwriter Steven Knight. Knight later departed the project, and in January 2025, it was confirmed that George Nolfi had joined as a writer. At Star Wars Celebration 2025, Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni reaffirmed that the Rey movie, along with films from James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Simon Kinberg, are still in development. However, with Kennedy’s exit as Lucasfilm president, the future of Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey film appears uncertain.
In an interview, Kennedy did not mention the planned Rey movie as a future project at Lucasfilm, leaving its status ambiguous.
The New Republic era has yet to be thoroughly explored, but Dave Filoni, a key figure behind much of Star Wars TV and the new co-president of Lucasfilm, is poised to change that. Filoni is set to direct a film focusing on the New Republic government that rises after the fall of the Empire.
Set in the timeline between The Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm has indicated that Filoni’s film will “close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series.” Many of these series are linked through character relationships, cloning technology, and post-Imperial power struggles. Given the significance of Emperor Palpatine’s return and Snoke’s rise in the sequel trilogy, Filoni’s film could provide crucial lore.
Like the Rey film, Dave Filoni’s untitled New Republic film was confirmed to still be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
James Mangold, director of Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, has a Star Wars film that was also confirmed to be in development at Star Wars Celebration 2025.
Mangold’s project stands out for one major reason: it takes place around 25,000 years before the original trilogy. This era explores the dawn of the Jedi, a fitting backdrop as Mangold aims to tackle questions that have intrigued fans since 1977, such as the origins of the Force and its discovery.
Speaking at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Mangold described his film as “a Biblical epic, like [The] Ten Commandments, about the dawning of the Force.” Kathleen Kennedy mentioned that Mangold was working on the script, but in the time since, the project has reportedly been put on hold.
Writer-producer-director Simon Kinberg, who has a wealth of experience in the Star Wars universe from co-creating and writing for Star Wars: Rebels, is now set to develop a new Star Wars trilogy.
There has been mixed reporting about Kinberg’s film: some sources claim it will comprise Episodes 10-12 of The Skywalker Saga, while others clarify that it is not intended as a continuation of that saga. What is clear is that, as Kathleen Kennedy confirmed, the project is envisioned as a trilogy that will guide the franchise into a new and exciting future.
Kinberg has expressed his enthusiasm for the planned trilogy, stating, “just to be told there’d be more movies would have been unbelievable. To be allowed on the set of any of them was already a dream. My enthusiasm only grows with working on and around it.”
He also cited Andor, from showrunner Tony Gilroy, as a significant source of inspiration, calling it “about as good of science fiction storytelling as you can do in any franchise.”
Among all the Star Wars films in development, Taika Waititi’s project remains the most enigmatic, despite being first announced in 2020. There were concerns about whether Waititi’s film had been shelved in 2023, but both Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Waititi confirmed that it is still in development. Waititi mentioned in 2023 that he didn’t “want to rush this movie.”
The latest updates on Waititi’s film came from Kennedy and Dave Filoni at Star Wars Celebration 2025, where they reiterated that it is still in development, with Kennedy stating that the project is “still somewhat alive.” Not the most reassuring news!
In 2020, Lucasfilm announced several projects; most have either been released, like Andor and The Acolyte, or canceled, such as Rangers of the New Republic. However, some remain in a strange limbo, neither confirmed as canceled nor discussed since their initial announcements.
One such project is A Droid Story, an animated film intended for Disney Plus, which was set to follow a new character guided by the beloved duo R2-D2 and C-3PO. Unfortunately, there have been no recent updates on this project.
Another project stuck in limbo is the spinoff featuring Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, first announced in December 2020. Its development has been rocky, with the Disney Plus series being reworked into a film. The showrunner, Justin Simien, departed the project, learning of the change through the announcement. Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover have since taken over writing duties for the Lando spinoff.
The shift from a TV show to a film puts the project in uncertain territory. This isn’t the first time Disney has made such a pivot; Obi-Wan Kenobi was initially planned as a movie before becoming a series. However, there is still hope. Former Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned in early 2026 that Glover has submitted a script, and like Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project, it’s “still somewhat alive.”
