US Enlists 2,000 Gamers to Tackle Air Traffic Control Challenges

Every year, air travel in the United States increases, yet the number of air traffic controllers managing those flights continues to decline. This shortage can lead to delayed or canceled flights, and in the worst-case scenario, it raises safety concerns. To tackle this issue, the U.S. government has taken an unexpected approach: recruiting gamers.

Air traffic control can be a highly rewarding career, with median annual salaries reaching $144,580 as of 2024. Traditionally, becoming a fully certified air traffic controller requires years of training, but that changed in 2025 when the U.S. Department of Transportation initiated a campaign aimed at gamers. The initiative was inspired by current air traffic controllers who noted that their gaming experiences helped them develop the skills necessary for the job.

Promotional materials targeted this audience, showcasing young gamers excited about the chance to combine their passion for gaming with a career that demands quick thinking and decision-making. These ads featured interviews with aspiring air traffic controllers alongside gameplay footage from popular titles.

Fast forward a year, and the results of this campaign are becoming evident. On August 9, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced that the department had successfully hired 2,000 gamers through a streamlined recruitment process, allowing candidates to enter the academy more quickly than in the past. Duffy highlighted on social media that this new approach enabled the government to attract the “best & brightest” candidates. Typically, only a small fraction of applicants would gain acceptance into the academy before undergoing extensive training.

However, this strategy has sparked controversy among the public, especially as the shortage has been worsened by inconsistent pay during government shutdowns. If these issues persist, the number of trained controllers may become irrelevant if no one is willing to take the job. Previous efforts to accelerate recruitment in critical fields have also faced challenges. Air traffic controllers have long described their work as one of the most stressful professions globally.

While public safety concerns are valid, personally, I’d trust a gamer who can build Fortnite towers in seconds with my life.
