A new adaptation of Sega’s classic light gun game, House of the Dead, is in development by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson. Meanwhile, original director Uwe Boll is crowdfunding a spiritual successor to the 2003 cult horror film.
Titled 23 Years Later: Return to Zombie Island, Boll explains in the crowdfunding campaign’s launch video that “we cannot name it House of the Dead because they’re making a $50 million House of the Dead movie with somebody else.” This film will serve as an unofficial follow-up to the original, which holds a 3% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Boll’s first foray into video game adaptations, House of the Dead, was intended as a prequel to the beloved Sega light gun games, featuring a group of party-goers fighting their way off a zombie-infested island.
“[House of the Dead] turned from the most-hated video game-based into a total cult classic,” Boll states in the crowdfunding video. “People love that movie, and I love that movie, and I called all the old cast and said, ‘Would you come back to do a real, retro, bloody, new House of the Dead-inspired movie?'” The response from the cast remains unconfirmed.
However, the crowdfunding campaign has had a rocky start, with only $5,000 raised of the $20,000 goal after four days. In contrast, the rival House of the Dead movie is reportedly a “top Sega priority,” with Isabela Merced, known for her roles in Superman and The Last of Us, recently joining the cast. Paul W.S. Anderson is set to direct this project.
23 Years Later: Return to Zombie Island currently lacks a release date.
