Valve Takes Action Against Steam Controller Scalpers with New Reservation System

Valve’s new Steam Controller flew off the shelves when it launched on Monday, and the company is set to open a “reservations queue” this Friday at 1 PM ET for those who missed out on the initial stock. Many eager buyers faced checkout issues before the controller sold out, leading to inflated prices on platforms like eBay, where listings exceeded Valve’s $99 price tag. Valve acknowledged the overwhelming interest but recognized the frustration many experienced during the purchasing process. To address this, they are implementing changes aimed at enhancing the buying experience and curbing reseller activity.

Once the reservations queue opens, your spot in line will be secured once you reserve. Valve stated that order emails will be dispatched in the order reservations were made when the controllers are back in stock. After receiving your order email, you’ll have 72 hours to finalize your purchase, and each account can only reserve one controller. To make a reservation, your account must be in good standing, and you need to have made a purchase on Steam before April 27th. Additionally, if you’ve already purchased a Steam Controller, you won’t be able to reserve another for now. The company plans to start fulfilling reservations in the US and Canada next week, with the UK, EU, and Australia to follow in the weeks after.

As for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, Valve hasn’t announced a specific release date for this year, although they recently imported a hefty 50 tons of game consoles. It’s hoped that when these products become available, Valve will utilize a reservations system similar to what they did for the original Steam Deck, even if it took a few months to clear the queue after its release.
