Valve’s Erik Wolpaw Reveals Studio’s Exploration of AI Tools
Erik Wolpaw, known for his work on Portal and Half-Life, recently shared insights on a podcast about how a small team at Valve is exploring the use of AI for generating text, audio, and more. While he doesn’t foresee AI overtaking creative writing anytime soon, he’s intrigued by its potential applications in gaming.
During his appearance on the podcast, Wolpaw discussed various topics, including Valve’s projects, and touched on the subject of generative AI. He clarified that this exploration is not a widespread initiative within the company and is not intended to replace any staff.
“We’ve been experimenting with some AI tools,” Wolpaw explained. “I’m not concerned about AI taking over creative writing because it’s not very good at it. We’ve been playing around with it, and I don’t think it will be writing novels that surpass human authors anytime soon.”
However, he noted that tools like ChatGPT could enhance gameplay by allowing characters to respond dynamically to player actions. Wolpaw believes this is where AI could shine, particularly in scenarios filled with chaos, like in a hypothetical Grand Theft Auto game.
“In game writing, we’ve always had to simulate characters reacting to player actions,” he said. “This is one area where AI could be worth exploring. So far, it’s not particularly creative or funny, but it excels at adapting to the unpredictable nature of gameplay, responding to whatever wild scenarios players create.”
Wolpaw expressed a keen interest in this specific application of AI, emphasizing that it could enable experiences that are otherwise impossible, regardless of how many human writers are involved.
Throughout the discussion, he made it clear that Valve is not heavily investing in AI or applying it to all their projects. “When I say we, this is not a Valve-wide initiative. It’s more of a small group exploring this technology,” he stated. He also reassured listeners that this exploration isn’t tied to any unannounced games, like Half-Life 3, and added, “Let it be known that this is not a concerted effort by Valve. This might be the first time they’re hearing about it!”
Wolpaw concluded by stating that he’s not interested in using AI to replace people or cut costs. Instead, he sees its potential for enhancing the overall gaming experience for players.
