There’s not much left to say about Nobuo Uematsu’s legendary music from Final Fantasy 7 that hasn’t already been expressed by more qualified voices, but veteran JRPG composer Yasunori Nishiki offers fresh perspectives.
Nishiki, best known for his work on Octopath Traveler, also contributed arrangements for Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth, including the new takes on One-Winged Angel and Hollow Skies. He recently shared his thoughts with an outlet about the experience of reinterpreting such a cherished score.
“Final Fantasy music is legendary to me, and creating remakes or arrangements feels like deciphering sacred texts,” Nishiki remarked. “There’s always something to learn from that work, and I feel my posture straighten every time I engage with Final Fantasy music.”
Nishiki’s description resonates deeply, reflecting the wisdom of someone seasoned in the music industry. It conjures images of a poised composer leading an orchestra in a spirited performance, captivating an audience, while also revealing his genuine passion for the music.
Regarding his own creative process, Nishiki noted that the secret to crafting memorable video game music often comes down to a good caffeinated drink, tailored to the task at hand.
“I typically reach for black coffee—especially unsweetened—when I’m buried in paperwork. Conversely, a sweet latte usually signals that I’m preparing to tackle a crucial battle theme, one I anticipate will be a challenge.”
As for my own writing fuel while crafting these soon-to-be classic news stories, it’s usually green tea or decaf coffee, since regular coffee makes me too jittery. You’re welcome.
