Vinland Saga Creator Confirms No Updates on Season 3: Project Is Currently On Hold
It’s been over three years since the second season of Vinland Saga, the adaptation of Makoto Yukimura’s acclaimed historical manga, aired, and fans are still left waiting for an animated conclusion to Thorfinn’s saga. The creator has expressed his apologies to the audience while confirming that a potential season 3 “is not currently in progress.”
Makoto Yukimura’s Vinland Saga is nothing short of a masterpiece. I can’t emphasize this enough; it firmly holds a place in my top three, right alongside Mob Psycho 100 and Fullmetal Alchemist. After two decades of publication, the manga wrapped up in mid-2025, and I’m grateful I discovered it later. The thought of waiting over a decade for Thorfinn’s story to reach its end would have been unbearable.
For those who only follow the anime, there’s some disappointing news. As noted by an outlet, Yukimura recently shared on social media that there are no current plans for a continuation of the second season of Vinland Saga.
In response to a fan, who heartbreakingly has a profile picture of Thorfinn, inquiring about any updates for a third season, Yukimura stated: “Sorry my friend, I have no good news about that. The project is not currently in progress.”
On one hand, this isn’t entirely unexpected. The studio is currently juggling multiple projects, including Chainsaw Man: Assassins Arc and the fourth season of Jujutsu Kaisen, along with three new anime titles set to debut in 2027.
On the other hand, it’s surprising that a third season of Vinland Saga hasn’t even been considered yet. This could mean one of two things: in the best-case scenario, we might not see a third season until 2029 at the earliest. In the worst-case scenario, the Blu-ray sales for Vinland Saga were disappointing enough that the studio decided against moving forward with season three.
While I couldn’t find specific sales figures for the second season, there is a silver lining: it was the third most-watched anime on Netflix from January to June 2023. Here’s hoping that bodes well for a follow-up, because this manga truly deserves it.
