The next installment in the Virtua Fighter franchise has officially been titled: Virtua Fighter Crossroads, with a release slated for 2027. The recently unveiled story mode promises a deeper narrative experience than typically found in fighting games.
The trailer introduces a brand-new character named Cielo, who appears to be the main character in this mode. Set in the fighting-centric town of Vilasapara, we see Cielo socializing with friends, engaging in arena battles, and evading the Chinese mafia.
Developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, renowned for its story-rich Yakuza series, the influence is clear: the Crossroads trailer focuses heavily on cinematic cutscenes, with minimal traditional fighting gameplay showcased. There’s a sequence that hints at a chase, followed by a brief return to the classic 3D fighter perspective for some brawling action.
It remains to be seen how this new narrative mode will integrate with the beloved characters from the series, and whether the fighters featured in the story will be available for multiplayer. However, fan favorites like Akira Yuki, Pai Chan, and Wolf Hawkfield have already been confirmed for the roster.
It’s been a significant gap since the last mainline Virtua Fighter title. While a remaster of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage was released last year, the original game is now two decades old. Virtua Fighter: Crossroads was announced in 2024, marking RGG’s entry into the series. With this title and the upcoming Stranger Than Heaven, the studio is certainly taking on some ambitious projects.
In the yakuza life, there are no KOs.
