Wallace & Gromit Creators Unveil Charming Pokémon Stop Motion Series

Stop motion animation has always felt like a form of magic to me. The level of patience required to capture every tiny movement of a clay model for an entire video, let alone a series or film, is something I can hardly fathom. Following the success of Pokémon Concierge, The Pokémon Company is teaming up with Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace & Gromit, to bring us a new series titled Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, and it looks absolutely charming.

During the ongoing Pokémon XP convention in San Francisco, Aardman Animation participated in a panel where they showcased the show’s puppets, shared insights into the stop-motion animation process, and unveiled a teaser trailer featuring the titular duo. The creators describe Sirfetch’d and Pichu as a “knight” and “squire” embarking on an adventure told entirely from the perspective of Pokémon. This means the series will feature no dialogue beyond the Pokémon calling out their names, with the narrative conveyed through meticulously animated puppetry.

My admiration for animators has only grown, especially seeing the unique style of The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, even within the constraints of stop motion. The team revealed that the animation process is incredibly time-consuming, with just about 13 seconds of finished animation taking a week to complete. This is why such projects can take years to bring to life, but the end result is truly impressive. The series is set to premiere on Disney+ in 2027.
