Walmart Lists Gears of War: E-Day for PS5 on Placeholder Page
Microsoft has confirmed that some of its upcoming first-party titles, like Fable, will be available on PlayStation 5, but the status of others, such as Gears of War: E-Day, remains uncertain. This has sparked hope among Xbox fans that it might stay exclusive as new gaming CEO Asha Sharma reassesses Microsoft’s strategy. However, a recent Walmart listing that surfaced just before the Xbox summer showcase may have dashed those hopes.
A placeholder page on Walmart for Gears of War: E-Day was found earlier, indicating a PS5 version of the game. It listed a price of $100 for the “standard” edition and included several “TBD” points in the product details, suggesting that this information could change. This raises the possibility that the PS5 listing is either accurate and went live prematurely or is merely speculative and could be updated after Microsoft’s showcase on June 7.
The showcase will feature a dedicated hour-long segment for Gears of War: E-Day, where we can expect an in-depth look at the story and gameplay, along with a potential release date rumored for the fall. It will also clarify whether the game will launch simultaneously on other platforms, be a timed exclusive like Forza Horizon 6, or remain entirely off PS5.
Choosing the latter would contradict Microsoft’s recent strategy of expanding the Gears franchise to PlayStation, which began last summer with a remaster of the original game that performed reasonably well. This has led to speculation that bringing the new title to PS5 players would be a logical move. However, Sharma is under pressure from Xbox supporters to maintain exclusivity.
“We’re increasingly becoming a platform,” she stated recently. “To be a platform, you need exclusive content and services. We’re examining that closely and need to be thoughtful about each title and learn from similar cases in the industry.”
Gears of War: E-Day will serve as a crucial test for how Sharma’s vision for Xbox balances exclusivity and multiplatform availability.
