Warframe Team Shares Their Sadness Over Destiny 2’s Conclusion

The end of online games often brings out the worst in those who see their gaming preferences as tribal allegiances, but that sentiment is rarely echoed by industry insiders. A perfect example of this is the response from the team behind Warframe to the unfortunate news about Destiny 2’s shutdown. Members of Digital Extremes have openly shared their sorrow over the conclusion of Bungie’s iconic franchise.

“It’s heartbreaking. It’s earth-shattering,” said Warframe’s community director, Megan Everett, when discussing the shocking announcement that Destiny 2 would no longer receive updates. “I never thought I’d see the day where I’d read an article from Bungie about Destiny 2 essentially shutting down,” she added. “No one is celebrating this situation for Destiny, its players, or its story.” While some have labeled Bungie’s live-service game and Warframe as direct competitors, Everett believes that competition can be beneficial.

Shortly after the news broke, Digital Extremes’ creative director, Rebecca Ford, took to social media to reflect on the significant impact Bungie games had on her life, stating, “There is no Warframe without the legacy of Bungie games.” She referred to Destiny as “a force of nature, loved and held in the hands of so many people who, for a moment, were part of the biggest thing in gaming,” and described it as “the only lasting pillar I had to look up to.”

At 16, my best friend (who gave me the name ‘rebulast’) and I rushed home with our midnight release copies of Halo 3, insisting to our parents it was crucial, and dove into more Halo than you could imagine.

The saying “a rising tide lifts all boats” rings true in gaming, yet it’s often overlooked by certain player groups. Fans have rallied around Destiny 2 since the announcement, albeit too late, and conspiracy theories surrounding Marathon have led to absurd Steam review bombings. When loyalties feel threatened, it can lead to misguided reactions. However, as Everett pointed out, “I’ve always said I never expect anyone to only play Warframe. You’d burn out so fast if you did. Having other games that scratch a similar itch is healthy for our genre. Having Destiny was healthy for us.”
