Warframe’s latest update, The Old Peace, is on track to shatter its Steam player count record, nearing 180,000 players.

Despite launching over a decade ago in 2013, the free-to-play online action shooter Warframe is experiencing a surge in popularity like never before. Following the release of the new update, The Old Peace, the game’s concurrent player count on Steam is nearing its all-time high. It’s easy to see why.

New content typically attracts both new and returning players, but even the Warframe team was surprised by the nearly doubled player count that The Old Peace has generated. Creative director Rebecca Ford shared a player graph on Twitter, noting, “we are doing our best out here to keep things alive but we were not expecting this much of a jump.”

Data from a Steam analytics site confirms this trend, showing that the player count peaked at just over 175,000 on December 10, the day of the update’s release. The last time the game saw such high numbers was in mid-2021, when it reached just under 190,000 concurrent players.

The success of Warframe goes beyond just player numbers. It’s a game that continually evolves, showcasing the dedication of developer Digital Extremes. What started as a simple concept of ninjas in space has transformed into a rich experience, highlighted by a presentation at The Game Awards featuring Werner Herzog attempting to explain the game’s essence.

As Twitch streamer DansGaming noted on Twitter, “The game is blowing up not only because it’s still one of the best F2P games with a fascinating story and very generous monetization. The dev team has been really amping up quality of life upgrades into every patch over the last few years.”

Looking ahead, 2026 promises even more for Warframe. Digital Extremes has indicated that The Old Peace is just the beginning of a significant narrative shift coming next year, suggesting that the player count record from 2021 may soon be surpassed.

How do you make a complex MMO accessible to newcomers? The Warframe team believes in continuous effort: “I don’t think we’ve ever quite got that 100% right.”
