At first glance, the latest update for Warhammer: Age of Sigmar’s Lumineth Realm-Lords might seem a bit lackluster. It includes a new Battletome, a Battleforce box filled with older models, and just one new miniature. As a Lumineth player, I felt a wave of disappointment.

However, appearances can be misleading. This update actually introduces a major shift in how our beloved aelves operate in Age of Sigmar, featuring a wild new Battle Trait and enhanced profiles for key units in the army.

Let’s dive into the most crucial aspect: the Lumineth Realm-Lords Battletome. Battletomes can vary widely; some provide substantial updates that transform gameplay, while others leave you feeling like you’ve paid for a rehashed version of the same book.

Fortunately, the latest Lumineth tome falls into the former category. With improved units (the Light of Eltharion has gone from decent to downright formidable), new Spell Lores, and Battle Formations, this update significantly alters how the faction plays. Fans will be thrilled, while opponents may find themselves in a tough spot.

If you’re looking to assemble a shining host of Lumineth Realm-Lords, consider checking out some indie retailers that often offer discounts on Warhammer models, making it easier to build your collection without breaking the bank.

There are too many new rules to cover in detail, so let’s focus on the standout change: the army’s new Battle Trait. Get ready to channel your inner Scinari Calligrave, as you’ll be crafting a “battle scripture” each turn.

At the start of every battle round, you’ll select one of five runes to grant a power to up to two friendly units on the battlefield. The Varinor rune, for instance, adds 1 to run and charge rolls—useful, but not overly exciting.

The real fun begins when you realize that while the effects of the rune last only a turn, the rune itself remains on your battle scripture. As you add more runes, their effects start to synergize, providing additional buffs. For example, combining the Varinor rune with the Ydriliqi rune, which subtracts 2 from enemy charge rolls, grants an extra +1 to wound rolls on combat attacks.

The potential impact of this later in the game, as you inscribe multiple runes, is enormous, opening up a world of strategic possibilities. For instance, if you inscribe Thalari and have four unique runes on your battle scripture, you can add 2 to casting rolls, increase friendly move characteristics by 4″, and score critical hits on unmodified attack rolls of 5+. Not too shabby!

You can also choose to play the same rune multiple times, with its effects stacking, allowing you to buff more units as you go. This flexible system means you can stick with a rune that works well for your army or aim for a full set to unleash chaos on the battlefield.

There’s also a notable shift in the army’s Spearhead lineup. The previous configuration included 10 Wardens, 10 Sentinels, 5 Bladelords, and a Scinari Cathaller. While it was fun to play, the Cathaller, while useful for protective wards, was a bit dull as a unit.

The new Spearhead army focuses on the Hurakan caste and now features the essential 10 Wardens, along with 5 Hurakan Windchargers, a Hurakan Windmage (who floats on his own personal cloud), and the impressive Hurakan Spirit of the Wind. This makes for a much more agile army, capable of closing in on enemies quickly.

It’s also a more exciting list overall. The Lumineth Realm-Lords are among the most visually stunning armies in the game, and having a lineup that includes a mix of basic troops, fun characters, and a beautiful cavalry unit is a welcome change.

Lastly, let’s discuss the new model: the Vanari Lord Regent. This on-foot option adds variety to the range (the previous Lord Regent was only available mounted). While it has lower stats than its mounted counterpart, with 5 Health and a 4+ Save, it still holds its own. The Wall of Blades ability enhances a nearby unit of Wardens, dealing mortal damage to enemy models within 3″ on a roll of 5+.

The miniature itself is a work of art. I painted mine to match my Ymetrica-themed army, and while the photo doesn’t fully capture its dynamic sculpt, it looks fantastic on the tabletop. The flowing double-cape and the pose of holding the helmet while surveying the battlefield are striking. I recommend painting this model in sub-assemblies to really showcase this noble hero. Now I just need to come up with a fitting aelven name—maybe Graeme.

In summary, while the physical releases may be minimal this time, the gameplay updates are substantial. If you play Lumineth Realm-Lords, the new Battletome is essential (much to the chagrin of your opponents, who will be pulling their hair out as you combo runes in turn four), and the new model is absolutely stunning. The shining companies prevail!
