Warner Bros. Confirms Sequel to Hogwarts Legacy
The prequel game set in the Harry Potter universe, Hogwarts Legacy, made waves as the top new release of 2022, racking up over 22 million copies sold in its first year in the U.S. and even surpassing that year’s Call of Duty title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Since then, Hogwarts Legacy has crossed the impressive milestone of 40 million copies sold, making a sequel a logical next step. Recently, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy 2 is officially in the works.
This announcement isn’t particularly shocking. Warner Bros. executives have long indicated that a follow-up to the billion-dollar success of Hogwarts Legacy was a top priority, especially given the company’s struggles with other titles like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, MultiVersus, and several high-profile game cancellations, including Wonder Woman. The WB Games division has committed to focusing on four major franchises, with Harry Potter being one of them.
In a letter to shareholders dated August 6, Warner Bros. emphasized that games are a crucial growth area for the company and pointed out its recent successes. They officially confirmed to investors that a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development.
During the second quarter, the company launched Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, which became the highest-rated Lego game ever, alongside Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, their second mobile game set in the Game of Thrones universe. These releases were part of a new strategy centered around four key franchises, each generating over $1 billion, with a focus on fewer, high-potential titles. The company anticipates that games will increasingly contribute to profitability as their pipeline grows, including the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy sequel.
For dedicated Harry Potter fans, this news isn’t a surprise. Back in 2024, WBD CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels stated that a successor to Hogwarts Legacy was a major priority for the coming years.
In 2025, JB Perrette, the CEO and president of global streaming and games for Warner Bros. Discovery, mentioned that after a “disappointing 2024” for the gaming division, the focus would shift to four franchises: Harry Potter/Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, Mortal Kombat, and DC, primarily Batman for single-character games, with potential for other opportunities as the new DC Universe develops. So far, the company has adhered to this strategy.
There are also indications that Hogwarts Legacy 2 could be on the horizon. In 2024, David Haddad, then-president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, revealed that the games team was aligning some of the overarching storytelling elements for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the narratives set to unfold in the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series.
As we approach the four-year anniversary of Hogwarts Legacy, it feels like the perfect time for more adventures in the Wizarding World. With major gaming events like Gamescom Opening Night Live in August and The Game Awards in December on the horizon, it wouldn’t be surprising to catch a first glimpse of Hogwarts Legacy 2, potentially aiming for a release in 2027 or 2028.
The original author of the Harry Potter series did not contribute to the new story.
