Warner Bros. is creating a series reminiscent of Team America.

Gerry Anderson was a trailblazer in television, known for his innovative use of marionettes equipped with electric components to create iconic British shows in the ’60s, such as the sci-fi adventures Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds. The creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, honored his distinctive style in their 2004 film Team America: World Police. Now, Warner Bros. is set to revive Anderson’s unique brand of puppetry with a new series titled Hit Squad, which was unveiled at the Annecy Festival.

This upcoming show is inspired by a pitch document Anderson crafted in 1983 for a puppet-centric television format that had merchandising potential. During a panel at Annecy, Warner Bros. Animation’s executive vice president, Peter Girardi, shared that he had been attempting to license Anderson’s earlier works. However, when navigating the rights became too complex, he reached out to Anderson’s son to explore any archived concepts.

Russell McLean and Darren Walsh, who previously collaborated on the puppet-centric Black Mirror episode “The Waldo Moment,” are tasked with modernizing Anderson’s style while keeping the effects practical, although CGI will be utilized for mouth movements.

A preview shown at the panel featured a new agent being briefed on her first day with Hit Squad. A flashback reveals her carrying a briefcase when a man attempts to steal it, leading to a scuffle in a train station restroom where she shoves a urinal cake into his mouth. The confrontation culminates with her detonating the briefcase, taking out her assailant in the process.

Initially, her new boss appears doubtful about her aggressive methods, but he soon realizes that her violent tendencies make her an ideal fit for Hit Squad. He showcases their impressive collection of cars and rockets, culminating in a montage of their arsenal in action that ends with a dramatic explosion across London. The vibe is reminiscent of a British take on Team America.

As of now, no release date has been set for Hit Squad. Warner Bros. is broadening its scope in adult animation with new series like President Curtis, Absolute Batman, and My Two Cars.

The girls are back in town.
