Warzone to End Support for PS4 and Xbox One Consoles
Today, a major announcement has dropped regarding the next chapter in the Call of Duty saga: Modern Warfare 4. This installment marks a significant shift, as it will be the first in the series to bypass the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which have been staples since the franchise began releasing titles on those platforms. As Call of Duty fully embraces the capabilities of the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the upcoming Switch 2, the popular battle royale mode, Warzone, will also be leaving the older consoles behind. By the end of this year, Warzone will no longer be accessible on PS4 or Xbox One.
On May 28, the announcement was made in a blog post primarily focused on Modern Warfare 4, detailing plans to phase out Warzone on the older consoles. Following the launch of MW4 on October 23, the game will integrate with Warzone. However, since MW4 is not releasing on PS4 and Xbox One, the process to shut down Warzone on these platforms is now underway.
“As part of this transition, Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will no longer be playable starting with Season 1,” the blog stated. “Beginning June 4, the game will no longer be available for new downloads on those platforms, though existing players can continue playing until Season 1 launches. Certain items, such as Call of Duty Points bundle purchases, will no longer be available on those platforms.”
Activision has indicated that the in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will close on June 25. Shortly after the launch of MW4 and the start of Season 1, Warzone on these older consoles will be completely shut down and unplayable.
Players who have linked their platform accounts to their Activision accounts will retain all their progress and unlocks when they transition to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC. Additionally, it has been confirmed that all previous Call of Duty titles will remain playable online on PS4 and Xbox One.
While it’s understandable that maintaining Warzone on consoles that are nearly 13 years old may have posed technical challenges for developers, the timing of this news is less than ideal. Over the past year, we’ve seen console and PC prices steadily rise. A PS5 in 2026 is now more expensive than ever, and players still enjoying Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One may find it financially difficult to upgrade, leaving them behind as the franchise moves forward.
