Weird Al Stays True to His Roots, Rejects AI Endorsements

In a recent chat, legendary parody artist “Weird Al” Yankovic made it clear that he wants nothing to do with AI and its music creations. While on his Bigger & Weirder tour, he shared that he recently turned down a lucrative offer because he refuses to be associated with AI.

Yankovic, who hasn’t dropped a new album since 2014, explained his reluctance to create new parody songs when the topic of AI-generated parodies came up. “I’m not a fan of AI,” he stated. He recounted an offer he received for a commercial related to business software aimed at boosting productivity. Initially intrigued by the financial incentive, he later discovered it involved AI, prompting him to back out. “I thought, ‘Oh no, I can’t be the poster boy for AI, forget it.’ I felt bad about pulling out at the last minute, but I’m just not on board with that.”

It’s refreshing to see an artist of his stature take such a firm stance against AI, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding celebrity endorsements of AI technology.

After the release of the Daniel Radcliffe-led biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story in 2022, Yankovic is now focused on a Broadway musical titled Dare to be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical, which he’s co-creating with talents from Moulin Rouge! and Beetlejuice: The Musical. With his iconic songs at the center, it’s clear he’s ready to keep the good times rolling.
