What Went Down Between Negan and Maggie in The Walking Dead While I Wasn’t Watching?
I, like countless others, was hooked on The Walking Dead when it first premiered. However, I eventually lost interest when tuning in felt more like attending a meeting that could have been an email. The slow pacing and the sense that the story was stagnating became frustrating, leading me to stop watching around the start of season four. Despite my departure, the early seasons remained a significant part of pop culture, so I was still aware of major events, like Negan’s shocking murder of Glenn in season seven. That moment caused many viewers to bail, yet the series continued for four more seasons and spawned several spin-offs. One of these features Negan and Maggie, Glenn’s widow, which left me puzzled when I saw images of them getting cozy at a bar.
The Walking Dead: Dead City brings back Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan as Negan and Maggie, who are now trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic New York City. While there’s a semblance of civilization, it’s mired in the usual power struggles that arise in the world of The Walking Dead. Throughout their journey, both characters grapple with their traumatic past, particularly Maggie’s experience of watching Negan brutally kill her husband and the father of her child. However, many fans note that Maggie has known Negan longer than she ever knew Glenn, and he has spent several seasons in both The Walking Dead and Dead City trying to redeem himself and find his place in this harsh world.
When Dead City was first announced, it hit me that The Walking Dead was no longer the cultural juggernaut it once was. After stepping away from the show, I was baffled by how Negan and Maggie could be allies, let alone the leads of their own spin-off. Recently, a clip from the upcoming third season has fans buzzing, as it appears these two are getting… quite close.
A behind-the-scenes look at the new episodes features various clips from the season. Most of them are typical fare: walkers, violence, and weary characters exchanging solemn glances in rundown settings. But at the 3:45 mark, we see a scene with a tipsy Negan and Maggie getting a bit touchy-feely. Maggie is seen playfully touching Negan’s face, suggesting they’re enjoying a lighthearted moment in their drunken state, but such interactions often hint at something more intimate.
This is where re-entering The Walking Dead gets tricky. It’s been a decade since Glenn’s death, and even though I haven’t been following the show, it has worked to show how both Negan and Maggie have evolved and become allies while navigating their complex emotions. But does the suggestion of a potential romantic or sexual relationship between them cross a line? Does it feel more like absurd fanfiction than a believable storyline? That’s the dilemma facing both current and former fans as Dead City seems to tease this possibility.

I keep imagining the reaction of someone who stopped watching the series after Glenn’s death and then stumbled upon this…

The Walking Dead: Dead City’s third season premieres on AMC on July 26. While I’m not keen on binge-watching all the missed seasons to catch up, I’m definitely curious to see how far the show will take the relationship between Negan and Maggie a decade after Glenn’s death, and I’ll be ready to watch the fandom react if it goes in the direction it seems to be hinting at.
