Witcher 3 DLC Unveils New Monster-Slaying Weapon That Lets Geralt Pull Off Mortal Kombat Moves

Songs of the Past marks the first major expansion for The Witcher 3 in over a decade, and CD Projekt Red is determined to send Geralt off in style. While the storyline details remain under wraps, the initial gameplay reveal showcased Geralt wielding a fierce new chain weapon designed to pull enemies closer for a brutal takedown.

What game doesn’t benefit from a grappling hook? For Geralt, this tool seems tailored for snagging monsters and dismembering them with flair. This could completely alter my usual strategy of dodging and rolling my way to bosses. Here’s our first glimpse of Songs of the Past in action, featuring the new weapon:

At Gamescom ONL, CDPR’s level design lead, Miles Tost, took the stage to share some insights from the new trailer. While this weapon is a fresh addition to The Witcher 3, it originally made an appearance in the opening of the first Witcher game back in 2007. The new content will unfold in a region called Letten, which Tost described as a seemingly idyllic land concealing a dark secret that only Geralt can uncover, primarily through a lot of monster slaying.

Songs of the Past doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but it’s expected to launch sometime in 2027. This will be Geralt’s final journey before CDPR hands the reins to his mentee and surrogate daughter, Ciri, in The Witcher 4, which is slated for a 2028 release. In the meantime, fans can look forward to a free remaster upgrade of the base game of The Witcher 3 arriving this fall.
