Wonder Woman’s Exciting Future Unveiled for 2027

Next year is set to be monumental for one of DC’s iconic heroes, and it’s not Superman we’re talking about. DC has dubbed 2027 the “Year of Wonder,” promising an unforgettable lineup of stories from renowned comic creators. With Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s somewhat polarizing run on Wonder Woman concluding in December, we now have a glimpse of what lies ahead for the character.

Writer Louise Simonson, known for her work on X-Factor, Conan the Barbarian, and The Death of Superman, will continue the story from King’s run with Wonder Woman #41. This upcoming arc will span four issues, featuring art by Cian Tormey.

Following Simonson, Eisner Award-nominated writer Stephanie Williams, recognized for her contributions to Wonder Woman and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, will take the reins for six issues, wrapping up in October 2027. It appears that neither writer will be a permanent fixture on the series, as a long-term creative team has yet to be announced. DC has also teased that more Wonder Woman stories and top-tier creators will be unveiled throughout 2027.

Simonson’s storyline will kick off with Diana striving to overturn the Amazon Safety Act, which has barred Amazonians from leaving their island. “I haven’t written many books with female leads, and they don’t come any more iconic than Diana,” Simonson expressed. “Teaming her up with Lois Lane, another legendary character, is a dream come true. Adding Granny Goodness and her Female Furies into the mix? It doesn’t get more exciting than that.”

DC has shared a first look at the covers for Wonder Woman #41, showcasing the main cover by Ryan Sook along with variants from Daniel Sampere, David Nakayama, Cian Tormey, and Walter Simonson. This 32-page issue is set to hit shelves on January 20, 2027, priced at $4.99.

Williams’ arc will feature a collaboration between Wonder Woman and Nubia. “Diana has my whole heart,” Williams stated. “Returning to her world after Wonder Woman and Matriarch feels like coming home, but this time with a longer runway. Six issues allow me to explore Diana’s character deeply, showcasing her fierce, funny, and compassionate sides, and letting the story unfold in a way I’m thrilled for readers to experience. Plus, I finally get to tell the Nubia team-up I’ve been wanting to explore for ages, but this time they won’t be heading to Las Vegas.”

King, celebrated for his work on Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, began his Wonder Woman run in 2023. Although he initially aimed for a 100-issue run, he opted to step back as he became more involved with DC Studios, where he’ll be showrunning an upcoming animated series for Mister Miracle, among other projects.

The controversy surrounding King’s run stems from his polarizing presence in the DC fandom. His writing often elicits strong reactions, with some fans loving it while others are critical, particularly regarding his portrayal of Diana, the dialogue’s verbosity, and perceived continuity issues. Additionally, King’s background as a former CIA officer adds to the mixed opinions about him.

Beyond the comics, the “Year of Wonder” may also bring exciting updates on the long-anticipated Wonder Woman film currently in development at DC Studios. Last year, it was mentioned that Ana Nogueira was writing the film, but details about who will take over the role of Diana from Gal Gadot remain unconfirmed.
