Woody Harrelson Shares Insights on Haymitch in Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping
Most of the cast of *The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping* faces the tough challenge of stepping into the shoes of characters previously brought to life by some of the best in the business. This is particularly true for Joseph Zada, who takes on the role of Haymitch, originally played by Woody Harrelson. To ease the transition, the two actors had the chance to share insights on set, with Harrelson offering some unexpected yet valuable advice.
In a detailed discussion about *Sunrise on the Reaping*, Zada mentioned that Harrelson suggested he watch *Cool Hand Luke*, the classic film featuring Paul Newman. While this might not have been the guidance Zada anticipated, Harrelson emphasized that he aims to channel that essence in his own performances.
Harrelson will also return as the older Haymitch in *Sunrise on the Reaping*, allowing both actors to spend time together during filming. Zada noted that their interactions mostly revolved around storytelling, with Harrelson showing genuine interest in Zada’s experiences. Interestingly, rather than providing specific direction on how to portray Haymitch, Harrelson focused on broader advice about the craft, suggesting that Zada will infuse his own unique perspective into the character, which is fitting given the differences from the version seen in the original films.
Zada isn’t alone in this situation; much of the cast is navigating similar waters. While this could be daunting, the team aimed to avoid fixating on past portrayals. Kelvin Harrison Jr., who plays a younger Beetee (originally portrayed by Jeffrey Wright), shared that director Francis Lawrence encouraged him, saying, “We’re not doing impressions and stuff like that. So I really want you to do your own thing.” However, Harrison Jr. also wanted to ensure that fans would recognize his interpretation of the character.
Elle Fanning echoed these sentiments regarding her role as Effie Trinket, following in Elizabeth Banks’ footsteps. Fanning noted that Banks encouraged her to make Effie her own, but she still felt the pressure to meet high expectations. This included incorporating elements from Banks’ portrayal into the character’s costume design. Fanning also sought to improvise and craft her own lines, much like Banks did in her performance.
*Sunrise on the Reaping* promises to provide a fresh take on Haymitch’s story within the Hunger Games universe. With each actor bringing their own insights to these well-known characters, it feels like a fitting evolution of the narrative.
*The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping* is set to hit theaters on Nov. 20.
Don’t be fooled by the graceful look of the arena.
