World of Warcraft Appears Set to Revisit D&D After Two Decades

A recently deleted blog post from Roll20 hinted at an exciting crossover between Dungeons & Dragons and World of Warcraft, likely set to be officially announced at Gen Con 2026 next week. An outlet reported that Roll20 briefly shared a post stating that preorders for “D&D World of Warcraft” were live, featuring promotional artwork that showcased the logos of both franchises. Although the post was quickly taken down, the preview and images were available for a short time afterward.

As of now, neither Wizards of the Coast nor Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed this project, leaving the specifics of the crossover uncertain. However, this leak comes just days before Gen Con, where D&D is anticipated to unveil more about its future during a keynote presentation on July 30.

World of Warcraft has previously touched on D&D themes, albeit unofficially. In 2003, Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game was released using the Open Game License, drawing from D&D’s third edition rules. This was followed in 2005 by World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game, which utilized updated 3.5 rules. Both were published by White Wolf’s Sword & Sorcery Studios, not Wizards of the Coast.

If this new release comes to fruition, it would mark Warcraft’s first significant tabletop role-playing game in over two decades and could be one of D&D’s most notable crossovers to date. The 5th Edition has previously explored licensed universes with products inspired by Stranger Things and Rick and Morty, but those were mainly starter sets and adventures rather than comprehensive campaign settings. D&D has also seen crossovers with Magic: The Gathering through sourcebooks like Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica (2018), Mythic Odysseys of Theros (2020), and Strixhaven: Curriculum of Chaos (2021), but those properties are all part of the Wizards of the Coast family.

The potential collaboration with World of Warcraft suggests that D&D may be adopting a crossover-heavy approach similar to Magic: The Gathering, which has ventured into franchises like Final Fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, and Marvel Comics through its Universes Beyond initiative. While Universes Beyond has sparked some debate among Magic fans, its most successful crossover sets have often focused on fantasy themes akin to the core Magic multiverse. Given this context, the high fantasy world of World of Warcraft seems like a perfect match for D&D.

In a May interview, Hasbro’s CEO hinted that more D&D crossovers are on the horizon. “I don’t want to take away any headlines from the D&D team,” Cocks stated. “But I think you can definitely expect more crossovers inside of D&D. I mean, we’ve had such a fantastic experience with [crossovers] with Magic: The Gathering. D&D is a fantastic play system that I think is very open-ended. You already have a fairly wide spectrum with things like Spelljammer to Curse of Strahd. So you already kind of have the DNA for it handled inside the system.”

For now, Roll20’s deleted post offers little more than a name and the indication that preorders are likely in the works. We should learn more about what “D&D World of Warcraft” entails when Gen Con kicks off on Thursday.
