WoW: Forever Intensifies Weather Effects, Players Are Going Wild

Blizzard is set to make a small but exciting adjustment to World of Warcraft: Forever, focusing on one of the game’s most cherished elements: its weather.

In a straightforward update on the WoW subreddit, the official developer account announced that “increased weather effects” will be introduced in specific zones during the ongoing beta of WoW: Forever.

Let’s be real: WoW players have a deep appreciation for weather. We’re always craving more of it! The original World of Warcraft featured some pretty intense weather effects that were added early on in various zones, like the blizzards in Dun Morogh and the monsoons of Stranglethorn Vale.

What made this weather special was its dynamic nature: sometimes it would rain, sometimes it wouldn’t. Coupled with the day and night cycle, this created a diverse atmosphere across Azeroth, making it feel like a living, breathing world.

However, as time passed, Blizzard began to scale back on these rich and varied effects in newer zones, and many existing effects were removed from the retail version. While you can still experience weather in some areas (I fondly remember the brief downpours in Zul’dazar from a few expansions back), it’s become more selective and less frequent in the older regions. Consequently, players have been urging Blizzard for years to reintroduce the old dynamic weather in retail, and with the announcement of Forever, many are advocating for its return in this new version.

Beyond just a desire for weather, many arguments from the community highlight WoW: Forever’s enhanced visual effects, which are already breathing new life into classic zones. Dark forests are shrouded in mist, sunsets and sunrises are stunning, and the water sparkles. So why not add rain, snow, and other weather phenomena to the mix?

Blizzard seems to be on board, and the community is buzzing with excitement. A short clip showcasing rain in Elwynn Forest shared on the subreddit is simply mesmerizing. The rain creates a gentle mist as it falls, and there are distinct sounds indoors depending on the type of roof—what a serene atmosphere! While we don’t yet know the full extent of the weather effects that will be implemented, players are already dreaming big. Requests for thunderstorms, snowstorms, autumn leaves, dust storms, and rolling fog are pouring in.

Given the ambitious scope of WoW: Forever, it’s entirely possible that we’ll see all of this and more, whether now or in the future. Blizzard has expressed its goal to expand the world horizontally rather than vertically, and dynamic weather would play a significant role in making “Azeroth the main character,” as the studio aims to achieve.

I can’t wait for those patch notes. I’m ready to head to the Mulgore plains and wait for some rainfall!
