From the trailers and our insights into the first four episodes, it’s clear that Season 2 picks up right where the previous season left off. The X-Men find themselves scattered across different timelines. This season’s primary antagonist will be the mutant Apocalypse. Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler will confront him in 3000 BC Egypt, where he is known as En Sabah Nur, the first mutant. Meanwhile, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, and Morph will battle Apocalypse in 3960 AD, where he has become a world dictator. Trailers also hint at the presence of Polaris, Magneto’s daughter with magnetic powers, and the adult version of Cable.
The episode titles offer intriguing hints about the season’s direction. Notably, some titles reference iconic storylines. For instance, “Days of Past Future” pays homage to “Days of Future Past.” Episode 7, titled “Strange Land, Savage Heart,” echoes “Savage Land, Strange Heart,” a storyline from Season 3 of X-Men: The Animated Series. Additionally, “Rise of Apocalypse” directly references Terry Kavanagh’s 1996 comic that explored the character’s origins and transformation from En Sabah Nur to Apocalypse.
Other titles suggest exciting developments as well. “A Force to be Reckoned With” likely alludes to the X-Force team led by Cable. The title of Episode 5, which includes “Weapon X,” hints at a focus on Wolverine. Episode 6 appears to center around Danger, a character who embodies the X-Men’s danger room as a sentient villain, based on the title and trailer appearances. Perhaps the most intriguing title is “The Dead Man’s Hand,” which seems to reference Gambit, who faced a dire fate in Season 1. However, in the world of X-Men, characters rarely stay dead for long. Whatever surprises Season 2 holds, fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out.
The second season of X-Men ’97 premieres on Disney+ July 1.
