While Marvel hasn’t provided an exact release date yet, it was announced during a panel at New York Comic Con that X-Men ’97 will premiere in Summer 2026.

Thanks to Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, we already knew that season 2 would arrive in 2026, which is a bit later than we expected, especially since production has been underway for months. But hey, good things come to those who wait.

We’ll keep you posted as more concrete details emerge. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a quick mutant fix, check out our guide on how to watch all the X-Men movies in order.

The first trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 was shown behind closed doors at New York Comic Con and isn’t available online yet. Fortunately, we were there to catch it.

From the trailer, it’s clear that season 2 will pick up right where season 1 left off. We see mutant cyborg Bishop bringing Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler back to the ’90s after their journey to a distant future in season 1. Plus, Wolverine makes an appearance in his classic Brown-Ochre suit from the Uncanny X-Men comic series.

The highlight of the clip is the introduction of the X-Men villain Apocalypse in his comic-accurate purple attire. While we got a brief look at him in season 1, it seems he will have a more significant role in the upcoming season.

Let’s recap X-Men ’97 episode 10. After the UN activates their “Magneto protocol,” things go awry, threatening to send Asteroid M crashing to Earth. Professor X manages to restore Magneto’s psyche, allowing him to save the world, but it results in Rogue, Storm, Xavier, Logan, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Magneto being transported to Egypt circa 3000 BC.

Jean and Scott find themselves in the future, around 3960 AD, alongside a younger version of their son Nathan and a woman named Mother Askani (who is Rachel Summers, their time-lost daughter in the comics). Fast forward six months, and Forge is left as ‘the last X-Man’ on Earth.

Jubilee, Sunspot, and Cable have survived the Blip-like ending but are marked “AWOL.” Bishop returns from his future adventure to help Forge ‘rebuild’ the X-Men. The post-credits scene takes us to Present Day Genosha, where Apocalypse ominously lifts Gambit’s playing card from the dirt.

This is significant for two reasons: Before the credits roll, Bishop remarks, “This ain’t our first time at the ‘The X-Men are dead rodeo,'” and a man named En Sabah Nur introduces himself to the X-Men trapped in ancient Egypt. En Sabah Nur is the mutant known as Apocalypse, who leads the Four Horsemen, a group Gambit becomes part of in the comics.

Regarding season 2 plotlines, Jake Castorena, supervising producer and head director of X-Men ’97, hinted at intriguing developments, saying, “Oh, did something happen with Gambit in the comics? Oh, that’s cool.” He also mentioned that “Everything is meticulously planned.”

Executive producer Brad Winderbaum noted that season 2 will introduce new superhero teams. “There are many teams in Marvel that have the letter ‘X’ followed by a hyphen. I would suggest there are two other X teams in season 2,” he explained.

Expect season 2 to continue the dark tone set by the first season. Professor X actor Ross Marquand expressed his surprise at the body count, stating he was “amazed Disney greenlit it because it’s so dark. It’s very, very dark. A lot of people die, and so many people don’t talk about it. Just being honest.”

It’s also known that series creator and former showrunner wrote part of season 2 before parting ways with Disney. “I did write a lot of Season 2,” he tweeted. “However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show.”

Marvel Animation’s head confirmed that a new head writer will take over for season 3, but they “are honoring Beau’s ideas for the second season.”

No casting news has been announced yet, but we can expect new additions as we approach season 2. The original voice actors from X-Men: The Animated Series make up a significant portion of the season 1 cast, though some are voicing different characters than in the original show.

We’ve compiled our best guesses on who will return for season 2, including the core cast and new voice actors introduced in the season finale.
