Xbox CEO Aims to Accelerate Next Halo and Fallout Releases, While Business Spin-Off Remains a Possibility

Xbox is in urgent need of standout titles, and new CEO Asha Sharma is focused on accelerating that process. According to a recent report, Sharma plans to streamline operations by cutting back on underperforming studios and projects, reallocating those resources to bolster major franchises like Halo, Fallout, and The Elder Scrolls.

The report indicates that while the overall game development budget for Xbox will remain stable for the 2027 fiscal year, resources will be shifted from certain areas to expedite development in others. It’s been five years since Halo Infinite debuted, and this year’s Halo: Campaign Evolved is merely a remake of the original game’s single-player experience. The Elder Scrolls VI appears to be still years away, with Fallout 5 expected to follow even later. Additionally, Sharma aims to invest more in Minecraft, which is lagging behind Roblox.

Sources suggest that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood have approved Sharma’s resource reallocation for the upcoming fiscal year starting in July, but they haven’t dismissed the possibility of a complete business restructuring. This could involve making Xbox a wholly owned subsidiary like LinkedIn and GitHub, forming a joint venture with another company, or even selling the division.

The effectiveness of Sharma’s strategy will likely influence Microsoft’s future direction. However, in the immediate term, it could lead to significant layoffs across Xbox, potentially affecting many studios acquired during Phil Spencer’s tenure. While Xbox sought a diverse range of content to enhance its subscription service, recent communications from Sharma suggest a shift back to focusing on its most reliable revenue generators.

Franchises like Halo, Forza Horizon, and Fallout consistently deliver strong sales. Last year’s remake of The Elder Scrolls IV outperformed many newer titles released alongside it. However, accelerating game development while managing rising budgets presents a complex challenge that may take years to resolve. Microsoft has yet to establish a reliable formula for delivering games on time and at a quality that impresses during award seasons.

In a recent appearance, Nadella stated that Sharma is “going to take a fresh look and make sure we deliver on what our fans expect of us,” emphasizing the need to transform this into a sustainable business.
