Xbox CEO Emphasizes the Need for Tough Decisions Ahead

We’re just over a week away from Xbox’s major summer showcase, and CEO Asha Sharma is gearing up her team with an update on Game Pass and a glimpse into the evolving mission within Microsoft in the coming months. The central theme is ensuring Xbox remains focused on delivering value where it matters most.

“We are building a stronger XBOX,” she stated in a recent memo. “This means making tough decisions about what we create, where we allocate resources, and what kind of company we aspire to be moving forward. This shift from Xbox to XBOX reflects a commitment to being intentional in how we engage with the players who care deeply about this brand.”

My initial thought is that it’s rare to see an executive attempt to clarify the significance of an all-caps rebranding. The next thought is a question: What does Sharma mean by “tough decisions”? In corporate lingo, this often hints at cuts and layoffs. The idea of reallocating funds from underperforming areas to those that show promise might seem like basic business strategy, but the specifics can be complex.

One of the tough decisions Sharma may be alluding to is her choice to lower the price of Game Pass and remove Call of Duty from the service. The recently announced Modern Warfare 4 won’t be available on launch day through the service, unlike last year’s Black Ops 7. “Growth slowed down and subscriber loss accelerated after the pricing and SKU changes last year,” Sharma noted in her memo. “Since our price reduction, we have seen acquisitions grow and retention improve, which is a positive first step.”

This is encouraging news for the platform, even if it feels like a bit of a recovery from a previous misstep. But what other tough decisions might be on the horizon? We’re nearly a year removed from the last wave of significant Xbox layoffs. Alongside those affected, several promising projects were also scrapped, including a highly anticipated reboot of Perfect Dark that impressed fans during its 2024 showcase, as well as an ambitious new sci-fi MMO called Project Blackbird at Zenimax Online Studios.

It remains uncertain whether the cuts are finished or if Sharma is still assessing how to best reallocate resources within her division. Hidden in her April memo to staff was a mention of returning the “business to durable growth with strong cost discipline.” The CEO has consistently shown her dedication to Xbox’s most passionate fans in various ways, including allowing them to vote on whether to adopt the all-caps branding. Only time will reveal which aspects of the expansive Xbox business she believes will resonate most with those fans.
