Xbox Confirms Gears of War: E-Day Will Remain an Exclusive Title
A significant shift is happening at Xbox, leaving many gamers feeling uncertain about the future direction of the console brand. One of the most striking announcements from Xbox’s June showcase was the confirmation that Gears of War: E-Day will not be available on PlayStation 5, marking a departure from Microsoft’s recent trend of embracing multiplatform releases. This raises questions about how this decision aligns with Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s candid memo regarding the struggling profit margins within the gaming division.
Exclusives are crucial for any console-focused strategy, but they also mean that studios and publishers miss out on potential revenue from players on other platforms. As Xbox braces for significant layoffs due to financial challenges across various sectors, speculation is swirling that this renewed focus on Xbox Series X/S exclusivity might be a temporary tactic to regain goodwill.
Some have even suggested that the decision to keep Gears of War: E-Day off the PS5 could be a strategic move to demonstrate that exclusivity isn’t financially sustainable for Xbox, potentially leading to a permanent shift away from it. However, Microsoft has firmly denied these claims.
“These rumors are false,” Xbox chief strategist Matthew Ball stated on X on June 16. “Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will remain exclusive. There are no discussions to ‘reverse course.’ As we mentioned last week, players can expect signature exclusives from us every year.”
During a recent Game Business live event, Ball explained that the announcement of several exclusives at the showcase was intended to reassure fans that this was part of a broader strategic shift rather than a one-time celebration for Xbox’s 25th anniversary. He hinted that more exclusives would be revealed in 2027 and beyond, coinciding with the anticipated launch of the next-gen Project Helix hardware, although specifics on how decisions regarding exclusivity will be made remain unclear.
When asked why 2026’s Clockwork Revolution would be an Xbox Series X/S exclusive while Ninja Theory’s upcoming Hellblade sequel would not, Ball responded with “No comment.” We now understand the reasoning behind this, as Microsoft is currently distancing itself from that studio and the game.
