Xbox Develops Solution to Digitize Your Physical Game Library as Sony Moves Away from Discs

On Wednesday, Sony revealed that it will stop producing physical game discs for titles released after January 2028. Coinciding with this announcement, a new report suggests that Xbox is exploring a method to convert your physical game discs into digital versions. The console rivalry is far from over.

According to reports, Xbox has been experimenting with a disc-to-digital feature since May. The process is straightforward: insert your disc, play the game, and receive a digital copy linked to that specific disc. When logged into a Microsoft account on your Xbox, you’ll gain a “digital entitlement” for the game associated with the disc you used.

You’ll still have the option to lend the game to a friend or sell it on the secondary market. The digital entitlement can transfer between Microsoft accounts and Xbox profiles. However, you won’t be able to create unlimited copies for multiple accounts to play simultaneously. This disc-to-digital feature bears some resemblance to Nintendo’s game-key cards for the upcoming Switch 2.

Here’s what we know, what we think we know, and what remains uncertain.

There are some limitations, though. Reports indicate that only Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs will qualify for this feature, meaning you won’t be able to digitize your older Xbox 360 or original Xbox games. Additionally, not all Xbox One titles will be compatible, as Microsoft has informed testers that eligibility depends on the manufacturing details of the disc.

With the potential for the PlayStation 6 to launch without a disc drive, it raises questions about whether Xbox’s upcoming Project Helix will follow a similar path—especially given the backlash Sony has faced following its recent announcement. While reports suggest that Microsoft hasn’t fully confirmed whether Project Helix will include a disc drive, some sources indicate it will not.

As the next generation of consoles approaches, it seems likely that the hardware will lean heavily towards digital formats, which could be a setback for long-time collectors of physical media. In many ways, the absence of a physical disc for Grand Theft Auto 6 offers a glimpse into what the future may hold.

2028 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Sony.
