Xbox Launches Trials for Ad-Supported Streaming Service

Xbox is exploring a fresh approach to enhance game streaming accessibility. Recently, Microsoft revealed that select Xbox players will have the opportunity to stream certain games after viewing ads, mirroring the ad-supported models seen in various streaming services.

Currently, this initiative is in a testing phase, available exclusively to members of the Xbox Insiders program and only for games they already own. Players are limited to one-hour sessions on supported devices. According to a post from the Xbox team, “The core game experience is unchanged,” and participation is entirely optional, allowing players to choose other methods of play whenever they wish.

The company emphasizes that this test and its ad-supported streaming option are designed with player interests in mind. “Advertising has been part of gaming for decades, from in-game placements to free-to-play models,” Microsoft stated. “However, it hasn’t always prioritized the player experience. When executed effectively, advertising can reduce access costs, providing another avenue for players to engage with games without an upfront streaming fee and broadening the audience through new play options.”

The Xbox team assures that the ads “do not interrupt the flow of gameplay” and commits to maintaining high standards for ad quality, similar to their content.

“We’ll learn from this test and continue to refine it based on player feedback and usage,” the Xbox team noted. “Our goal is straightforward: to offer more people affordable ways to play.”

Affordability is a key focus for Microsoft’s gaming division, especially following significant price increases for Xbox consoles. After raising the prices of the Xbox Series X and S in 2025, another price hike is set for August 1, with the standard Xbox Series X reaching $799.99 and the Xbox Series S with 512 GB of storage priced at $499.99. Microsoft has also been promoting financing options and Buy Now, Pay Later plans, suggesting that purchasing used consoles is the most budget-friendly entry into the Xbox ecosystem.

Additionally, Microsoft is implementing substantial cuts within its Xbox division, announcing 3,200 layoffs in the games group over the year and closing at least four studios as part of cost-reduction efforts.

Despite these challenges, Microsoft maintains that the Xbox Series S remains one of the most economical ways to access major gaming franchises.
