Xbox Steps Up to Rescue Kojima’s Stealth Action Game After PlayStation’s Cancellation Attempt

The next espionage thriller from the legendary Hideo Kojima, known for the Metal Gear Solid series, is taking an unexpected turn. In a surprising development, PlayStation has decided to part ways with Kojima Productions on the upcoming game, Physint, allowing Xbox to step in and secure the publishing rights. Kojima expressed his enthusiasm for the new partnership, stating, “We found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again.”

The news unfolded dramatically, starting with a tweet from PlayStation announcing their split with Kojima. They stated, “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT,” while also expressing admiration for Kojima’s vision.

Despite Sony’s claims of a strong ongoing relationship, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma quickly tweeted that Physint would now be under Xbox’s banner. Microsoft is already collaborating with Kojima on the intriguing horror project OD, which has weathered recent corporate changes. Sharma highlighted the significance of this new deal, marking it as a pivotal moment for Xbox.

Kojima later joined the conversation, sharing insights into the circumstances that led to this shift. He revealed that in mid-June, PlayStation Studios unexpectedly informed them of the cancellation of the Physint project. “Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner,” he explained, ultimately finding a shared vision with Xbox.

An official announcement from Xbox also detailed that this partnership would extend beyond gaming, with plans for collaboration in film and television to reach wider audiences. Sharma previously mentioned ambitions for a billion daily users engaging with Xbox entertainment, and reports suggest Microsoft is exploring significant licensing deals for adapting popular franchises into movies and TV shows.

Physint was first unveiled during a PlayStation showcase in January 2024, well before the release of Death Stranding 2, and details about the game have been scarce since. The reveal was notable, featuring PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst alongside Kojima, with the segment filmed on the Columbia Pictures lot in Hollywood. At that time, Hulst expressed excitement about the project and promised full support from Sony’s innovations. Clearly, things have taken a different direction.
