Xbox Unveils Disc-to-Digital Program Set to Launch Next Week

Xbox has unveiled an exciting new disc-to-digital program that enables players to convert their physical game copies into digital versions. This initiative, which was initially hinted at back in July, is set to launch on August 31.

Jason Ronald, the VP of Next Generation at Xbox, shared the news in a recent post. He stated, “Today we are introducing a feature that brings the benefits of digital to physical discs, giving players more flexibility in how they access and play supported games across the Xbox ecosystem.” Ronald emphasized that this move is part of a larger commitment to game preservation, highlighting the importance of maintaining access to owned games as technology and distribution methods evolve. Players who are part of the Xbox Insider program will have the opportunity to test this feature starting next week.

The new program will support a majority of disc-based games from Xbox One and Xbox Series X. To claim a digital copy, players simply need to insert the physical disc into their console and launch the game. After claiming the digital version, players will gain access to digital-exclusive features like Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming, provided the game supports them. The physical disc will remain functional even after the digital copy is claimed. The program is set to launch with support for thousands of titles, with plans to expand the library over time. With Sony announcing the end of physical disc production by 2028, signaling a shift towards an all-digital PlayStation 6, Xbox’s move reinforces the industry’s trend toward digital gaming.

This disc-to-digital feature aligns with CEO Asha Sharma’s new strategic vision for Xbox, which focuses on revitalizing the brand through console exclusivity and major franchises like Halo and Gears of War. However, this strategy has also led to significant layoffs, impacting over 3,000 employees and resulting in the closure of several studios, including Compulsion Games, the developer behind South of Midnight. Additionally, Xbox is currently facing scrutiny from the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.
