February 11 marks the 28th anniversary of the iconic JRPG Xenogears, and Square Enix has offered a small nod to the occasion: a single tweet acknowledging the game’s legacy. For diehard fans, this is the most official recognition they’ve received in years, and many are seizing the moment to plead for a remake, remaster, or any modern release.
Square Enix’s tweet celebrates Xenogears’ legacy, describing it (via translation) as “a new generation cybernetic RPG that radiates unparalleled originality.” This is a fitting tribute to the 1998 PS1 classic, which remains influential despite not being re-released since the PS3 era.
The replies to that tweet are already buzzing with excitement. “Xenogears mentioned by an official Square account,” one user notes. “Please, they know I want it. Give me that remake or rerelease with quality of life upgrades, I’m on my knees here.”
“28 YEARS!!!! and Square, I swear I need you to do… ANYTHING with the game other than promoting it to sell merch.”
“You guys could, you know, make it accessible to new platforms,” another user suggests. “Just saying.”
“BRING IT BACK PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE,” another commenter exclaims.
There’s also chatter about the upcoming PlayStation State of Play later this week. Could Square Enix really post a birthday tribute without something bigger in the works? Well… yes. Tweets are free, and with 2.3k retweets, this one has certainly sparked a lot of engagement.
Director Tetsuya Takahashi left Square shortly after Xenogears’ release to establish Monolith Soft. Now, decades later, that studio is part of Nintendo and continues to build on Xenogears’ legacy with the long-running Xenoblade Chronicles series. Whether Takahashi and Monolith or Square Enix will ever revisit the game that started it all remains a mystery after all these years.

Xenogears’ translator faced challenges with the legendary PS1 JRPG, and not just because it involves themes of divine conflict: “At the time, I was a Jehovah’s Witness.”
