Yellowjackets Star Reflects on “Bittersweet” Final Season, Hopes for “Cruel” Shauna’s Redemption
Sophie Nélisse, known for her role in Yellowjackets, has teased fans about the thrilling ride awaiting them in the show’s fourth and final season, sharing her mixed feelings about Shauna Shipman’s journey as they approach the end.
“It’s definitely bittersweet,” she expressed when asked about her emotions ahead of filming starting in February. “These characters have really influenced who I am today; I’ve grown alongside them and learned so much. It’s tough to say goodbye to a show we’ve all come to cherish. It’s been a dream job, with an incredible collaborative atmosphere, rich characters, and compelling story arcs. I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this for the past few years.”
Season 3 of Yellowjackets was packed with shocking twists, including Natalie uncovering Misty’s sabotage of their plane’s emergency beacon shortly after their crash in the ’90s, and the brutal murders of Van and Lottie in the present timeline. The season wrapped up with adult Shauna’s husband Jeff and daughter Callie leaving her, as Jeff sought to shield their child from the chaotic environment Shauna has created over the years.
“Part of me wants her to continue being cruel, but I also hope she finds some hope and redemption that feels earned,” Nélisse shared with a laugh. “I know she’s built a solid fan base of haters, but I hope to see more Shauna defenders emerge. We’re just as eager as the audience to see how these scripts turn out, and I trust the writers will deliver an explosive finale.”
In the closing moments of the latest episode, ‘Full Circle’, Sophie Thatcher’s Natalie manages to reach out for help via a satellite phone, hinting at a potential rescue for the group early in season 4. With the teens having spent so little time outside the wilderness, it will be fascinating to see how they adjust during those first days back home.
Before stepping back into Shauna’s shoes, Nélisse will join Dafne Keen from Deadpool and Wolverine in the supernatural horror film Whistle. Directed by Corin Hardy, known for The Nun, the movie follows a group of unsuspecting high school students who inadvertently accelerate their own demise after using an Aztec whistle that summons the Grim Reaper.
All three seasons of Yellowjackets are currently available for streaming. Whistle hits US theaters on February 6.
