Yoko Taro Commends Hideki Kamiya for His Witty Responses to Challenging Fans: “Some Comments Are Truly Absurd”
Nier: Automata mastermind Yoko Taro recently shared his thoughts on the frustrating comments developers often receive from players online, highlighting one individual who stands out for his unique approach: Hideki Kamiya, the legendary creator behind Devil May Cry, Okami, and Resident Evil.
During a recent episode of Cafe Four Leaf, a talk show hosted by Kamiya, Taro praised his fellow developer’s knack for responding to rude fans on social media. For those unfamiliar, Kamiya is notorious for his sharp comebacks, often likening disrespectful commenters to insects and blocking anyone who crosses the line. If you haven’t seen it firsthand, a quick visit to his Twitter account reveals just how entertaining it can be.
Taro expressed his understanding of the challenges faced by game creators in the public eye. “As a game developer and a public figure, you attract attention from a wide range of people, including some real oddballs,” he noted. “Some comments can be downright absurd or inappropriate. But since these individuals are your customers and audience, you can’t always respond as strongly as you’d like.” However, Kamiya seems to take a different stance, unafraid to push back.
Taro elaborated, “Kamiya doesn’t hold back. He tells them, ‘Go away, you insect!’ Just like in real life, there are people who will stand up for themselves when provoked, and I think it’s a positive thing to show that some game creators have that edge.” He added, “That’s why having Kamiya-san as a peer in the industry is incredibly reassuring.” Kamiya echoed this sentiment, stating, “Many people expect us to be their punching bags, so they’re shocked when we hit back.” Despite his fierce online persona, colleagues say he’s quite different in person.
It’s understandable; the online world can bring out a side of people that doesn’t always reflect who they are in reality, and dealing with relentless negativity is never easy. Keep rocking, Kamiya!
