Yoshi Steals the Show from Mario on Mario Day

Today might be Mario Day, but it’s all about Yoshi this week. On Monday, a fresh trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped, revealing that Donald Glover will lend his voice to the beloved egg-laying dinosaur in the film. Then, on Tuesday morning, Yoshi’s upcoming video game adventure got its own trailer along with a confirmed release date in May.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is a 2D platformer where Yoshi dives into the pages of a living encyclopedia named Mr. E, cataloging the various creatures he encounters. He learns about these creatures by swallowing them and then laying eggs. The “Creature Discovery!” trailer highlights how Yoshi’s taste tests reveal information on-screen; one creature showcased has a notably bitter, soap-like flavor.

Once Yoshi finishes his research on a creature, it’s time to name it, and gamers are sure to have a blast with that! When given the chance to name something in a game, players often turn to the most colorful language available. It’s safe to assume that Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will have stricter censors than the recent Nintendo Switch ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. In the trailer, Yoshi asks Mr. E for a name suggestion, and Mr. E comes up with Glubbit—pretty tame, but it fits.

The trailer wraps up with a cameo from Bowser Jr., who will be voiced by Benny Safdie in next month’s Mario movie. Nintendo also announced that Yoshi’s next adventure will launch on May 21, making it the must-play title for Nintendo Switch 2 this May.

Yoshi took center stage on Mario Day after a new trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park was released. This update for Switch 2 is set to drop on March 26.

And just to clarify, today is Mario Day not because March 10 has any special meaning in the Mushroom Kingdom, but because when you squish the date together in all caps (MAR10), it resembles the name of our favorite mustachioed hero. Mario Day 2026 brought new Mario content to Nintendo Classics and some sweet deals on Mario games. There was also an announcement for a new Lego Luigi, proving that even on Mario Day, Nintendo’s other characters deserve their moment in the spotlight.
