Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons, is set to take the reins on his upcoming Resident Evil film.

Constantin Films, known for producing several live-action adaptations of Resident Evil, is back to support Cregger’s unique vision for the franchise. CEO Oliver Berben is eager for Cregger to infuse his own creativity into this new video game adaptation.

Cregger has been granted “carte blanche to do whatever he wanted to do with that IP,” as reported.

“With Resident Evil, we have had an incredible journey with one of the most successful international IPs, grossing over a billion dollars at the box office for many years. Now, we’re crafting something fresh—not just a new story, but allowing a new generation to take the IP and create something different.”

This aligns with what Cregger has shared with eager fans about the film. Earlier this year, he described it as a “comedic” and “crazy” origin story.

Additionally, it seems that no legacy characters from Resident Evil will make an appearance, much to the dismay of Wesker and Leon fans.

“It’s an entirely original story,” Cregger stated. “When you watch it, you’ll think, ‘This is very Zach.’ It’s set in the Resident Evil universe, but I don’t think fans of the games are going to be disappointed.”

Cregger, a fan of the games, has also confessed to never having watched a Resident Evil movie. This means his interpretation is unlikely to be influenced by previous live-action adaptations, which have received mixed reviews from both fans and newcomers.

Resident Evil, featuring Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, and Zach Cherry, is set to hit theaters on September 18.
