Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 Sold Out, Scalpers Listing It for $900
Nintendo has been surprisingly quiet about special editions for the Switch 2, having released none during the console’s first year. So, the recent announcement of a special edition for The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary is a welcome surprise. However, the downside is the scalpers already trying to flip a console that won’t be available until October 29 for nearly double the price.
This special edition features a sleek black-and-gold dock, black-and-gold triangle designs on the back, and two green-and-gold Joy-Cons. It also includes a matching case adorned with the gold Triforce logo and a special edition Pro controller that combines the black, gold, and green aesthetics. While the overall design is appealing, the dock, lacking any green accents, unfortunately reminds me of something from a past administration. Still, it’s a stunning set that will surely attract diehard Zelda fans and anyone looking to grab a Switch 2 this winter.
Naturally, scalpers have jumped in.
Retailers have listed the Zelda Switch 2 for pre-orders at $520, which is $20 more than the recently increased price of the standard Switch 2, but they quickly sold out. As noted, scalpers are now listing the console on resale sites for prices ranging from $700 to as high as $985.
Some scalpers are even showing more savvy than Nintendo and major retailers by bundling the new Switch 2 with the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake. In a surprising move, Nintendo isn’t including the game with the console and is launching the 40th anniversary Switch 2 a week before the highly anticipated remake, which is set for November 6.
It’s clear that no one should pay these inflated prices, which will only rise if people do. While those Joy-Cons are undeniably stunning, the console itself won’t perform any differently! You’d essentially be shelling out an extra $400 for some unique designs.
This situation is exacerbated by Nintendo not yet offering pre-orders for the special edition on its own site, and it seems they’ve manufactured it in such limited quantities that demand is outpacing supply even before its release. When the original Switch 2 launched in 2025, Nintendo made efforts to ensure customers could purchase it directly from their site, so perhaps they have similar plans in mind for this special edition?
