After the monumental success of Breath of the Wild, which captivated players with its limitless creativity, Nintendo recognized there was still more to explore, leading to the development of Tears of the Kingdom, as shared by the game’s creators.
In a recent interview, producer Eiji Aonuma reflected on the launch of Breath of the Wild, noting how players showcased remarkable creativity in their interactions with the game world. This realization confirmed to the developers that they were on the right path. “After we released the game and saw what people were doing with it, we realized that this was the right direction to head in,” he stated. “We saw that people were exploring how to play.”
Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi elaborated on this idea, explaining how the team utilized the same development environment from Breath of the Wild to brainstorm new concepts for in-game mechanics and tools, such as the Zonai abilities like Ultrahand. “After completing Breath of the Wild, we were using the same development environment, coming up with new ideas using those same tools,” he described, detailing their creative process.
“We experimented with gears that moved on their own, attaching them to a board, and discovered we could create a car. We also created a tube using four boards and a remote-controlled bomb to launch objects.” This spirit of experimentation fueled Fujibayashi and his team to enhance Breath of the Wild with a sequel, ultimately leading to Tears of the Kingdom.
“We believed there was a lot of potential in what we had already established in Breath of the Wild,” the director explained. “That’s where I came up with the idea that we could continue to make Breath of the Wild even better. That’s why I thought a sequel would be a good idea.” He concluded, “In that sense, Aonuma and I were aligned.” Both developers aimed to elevate the foundation laid by Breath of the Wild with a follow-up title.
And I’d say they absolutely succeeded. Just take a look at some of the incredible creations that emerged from Tears of the Kingdom. For example, one fan managed to recreate an aircraft from Metal Gear Solid 2 – and that’s just scratching the surface.
