Zoro Gets the Flashback He Deserves in New One Piece Novel
In One Piece, nearly every member of the Straw Hat Pirates has had their backstory delved into through emotional flashbacks that unfold over multiple chapters or episodes. However, one notable exception is Zoro, Luffy’s first crewmate. This could change with the upcoming release of One Piece Novel: Zoro.
Authored by Jun Esaka, the novel initially featured three chapters published in One Piece Magazine between 2024 and 2025. It dives into Zoro’s past, detailing the impact of his childhood friend and rival Kuina’s death and his journey to meet Luffy. The narrative reveals how Zoro’s obsession with Dracule Mihawk, the world’s strongest swordsman, developed. While it was initially stated that the novel was crafted under the guidance of One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, that claim has since been retracted.
This project may hold more weight than just a casual side story. The three chapters are set to be released in book format soon, accompanied by additional new content. Being published under the Jump Books imprint and featuring fresh material could elevate One Piece Novel: Zoro as a crucial insight into the Straw Hat’s history. The book is scheduled for release in Japan on July 3.
Although Zoro’s lineage was touched upon during the Wano arc, revealing his descent from the Shimotsuki clan, he has yet to receive a comprehensive flashback, aside from a few pages in chapter 5 of the manga. Oda has mentioned that he never intended to give Zoro a tragic backstory, preferring to emphasize that the character’s strength stems from his ambition to become the best. Nonetheless, fans have longed for more depth. Flashbacks in One Piece are renowned for their emotional weight, making Zoro’s lack of one feel like a missed opportunity.
In contrast, other Straw Hats have had extensive explorations of their pasts: Nami, Robin, Chopper, Franky, Usopp, and Sanji all received entire arcs connecting their histories to current events. Brook even had a second flashback introduced in the latest manga chapter. Zoro’s introduction to Luffy’s crew was relatively straightforward, but that doesn’t diminish the strength of his bond with the captain. One Piece Novel: Zoro presents a valuable opportunity to uncover more about Zoro’s character and motivations, especially if Oda is involved in overseeing the new chapters.
