Aurelia Ruetsch Appointed Secretary General of the Global Esports Federation
The Global Esports Federation (GEF) has made a significant move by appointing Aurelia Ruetsch as its new secretary general, marking a historic moment as she becomes the first woman to hold this position. Ruetsch will report directly to the GEF President and operate under the guidance of the GEF Board, with a mission to enhance the federation’s global membership and promote a truly interconnected esports ecosystem.
Having joined the GEF board as a founding member in 2019, Ruetsch brings a wealth of experience, previously serving as the deputy CEO and director of operations for WorldSkills Lyon 2024. This competition showcases skills across various fields, including construction, creative arts, and information technology. She is also the COO of World Technology Group.
Her extensive background in managing global sporting events includes roles such as head of protocol planning for Expo 2020 Dubai, overseeing protocol for special events at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017, and managing the tournament guest program and protocol for the Rugby World Cup in England in 2015.
“I am deeply grateful to our President and the Board for their trust and confidence,” Ruetsch expressed. “Esports is one of the most powerful cultural and generational connectors of our time, and to serve as Secretary General of the Global Esports Federation is both an honor and a responsibility. Together, we will continue to build an institution defined by integrity, inclusion, and a clear commitment to the future of our global community.”
However, the GEF faced challenges at the end of 2025, as reports indicated that events planned in Peru were on hold. A representative from the Peruvian Esports Federation mentioned that government actions were pending, which contributed to the suspension. “It is suspended due to factors external to the federation,” the representative stated, noting that the government had not yet fulfilled its obligations. The Global Esports Games, GEF’s annual championship event, was scheduled for November in Lima, Peru.
