G2 Unveils New Performance Lab in Partnership with Red Bull
G2 Esports has unveiled the G2 Performance Lab, a cutting-edge research and innovation hub supported by Red Bull. This initiative aims to integrate scientific methodologies into G2’s competitive teams and generate insights for the broader esports community.
Based in Berlin, G2 plans to concentrate on enhancing performance, athlete wellbeing, coaching strategies, training frameworks, and support systems for its top-tier rosters. Leading the charge is Ismael Pedraza-Ramirez, G2’s Performance Lab Director and performance coach, who will collaborate with academic partners from institutions like the German Sport University Cologne and Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
This launch signifies a significant evolution in the esports landscape, as top organizations shift their focus from merely spending on rosters and sponsorships to building infrastructure that can enhance competitive results, promote player longevity, and establish sustainable advantages. In traditional sports, departments dedicated to sleep, nutrition, psychology, recovery, and data analysis are now commonplace at elite levels. However, similar systems in esports are still developing, despite increasing research into the cognitive, psychological, and health challenges faced by professional gamers.
Pedraza-Ramirez is a key figure in this emerging academic domain. His research contributions span esports psychology, coaching, and mental health, with affiliations to both the German Sport University Cologne and G2 Esports. A forthcoming 2024 paper, co-authored by Pedraza-Ramirez, highlights the mental health challenges competitive gamers encounter, emphasizing the need for more focused initiatives and research.
The lab’s inaugural project, “A Space for Leaders,” is dedicated to fostering leadership development among staff through research and collaborative learning. This initiative is part of one of four core pillars: coaching and coach development, alongside training design and delivery, player development, and performance health and support systems.
While the announcement does not reveal the financial specifics of Red Bull’s involvement or the duration of their partnership, it does indicate that research findings are anticipated soon.
Red Bull’s involvement is strategically significant, as the company has long emphasized athlete performance beyond just sponsorship visibility. Its Athlete Performance Center serves as a “global performance accelerator” for professional athletes and teams, and Red Bull has been active in esports through competitive events, team partnerships, and performance-focused content.
G2 and Red Bull have an established commercial relationship, having announced a multi-year partnership in 2019, which built on previous collaborations with Red Bull Racing. Red Bull is currently recognized as one of G2’s partners.
“As a long-standing partner of G2, Red Bull has been instrumental in realizing the vision behind the G2 Performance Lab,” stated G2 CEO Alban Dechelotte. “Their commitment to investing in athlete performance and high-performance environments is well-known. Together, we aim to create something truly impactful. When partners share the same vision, it elevates ideas, sets higher standards, and expands the realm of possibilities.”
For G2, the lab enhances its identity as both an esports team and an entertainment brand. The organization has broadened its reach across various competitive titles and sports-entertainment formats, including its participation in Gerard Piqué’s Kings League through G2 Football Club. Additionally, G2 secured a seven-figure Series B funding round in 2025, with Dechelotte noting that the organization has been profitable for several years.
Pedraza-Ramirez emphasized that the lab aims to fill a crucial knowledge gap in elite esports development.
“The work we’re doing at the G2 Performance Lab is groundbreaking for both esports and sports, and it will transform our approach to performance enhancement at G2 and beyond,” he remarked. “Elite esports competitors are already exceptional, but they have the potential to reach even greater heights. There’s still much to learn about developing them into world-class athletes, and we’re taking significant steps to address that with the support of Red Bull.”
