PlayVS Teams Up with Urban One to Launch HBCU Esports League

A new partnership has been formed between a North American esports organization and a media company to foster a competitive gaming community specifically for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country.

While the financial specifics of the agreement remain under wraps, the three-year collaboration aims to create a dedicated space for HBCU esports within the PlayVS College League framework. This initiative will leverage the cultural influence of the media company, which boasts a monthly reach of 80 million unique users, alongside PlayVS’s established collegiate competition infrastructure to enhance visibility and accessibility.

“Black gamers are a powerful force in the gaming world, yet Black professionals make up only about 5% of the industry workforce,” stated a representative from the media company. “The issue isn’t a lack of talent; it’s about access. Our partnership with PlayVS is designed to create a national platform for HBCU students, increasing visibility, structured competition, and genuine pathways into the gaming industry they have significantly shaped. This initiative is about transforming cultural influence into real opportunities.”

The partnership will establish a league open to any HBCU interested in competing, with registration set to begin this fall and the official competition season kicking off in February 2027. Preparations will start in the Spring and Summer, as outreach to HBCU institutions eager to join the initiative gets underway. The National HBCU Esports Community is expected to launch early next year, providing a structured, national competition platform for participating schools.

The media company will support PlayVS throughout this process, enhancing the initiative through its extensive content distribution network and media channels.

Additionally, PlayVS will organize the PlayVS College League and Invitational Series in the Fall, allowing participating institutions to compete in both the College League offerings and special HBCU-focused invitational events aimed at building competitive momentum and national recognition.

Further details about this exciting new initiative will be shared in the coming months.
