Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition Finally Launches on Switch 2 — After the Most Dramatic Port Saga in Years
After one of the messiest and most publicly scrutinised porting sagas in recent memory, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is finally landing on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 28, 2026. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco originally intended to have the game ready for 2025, but an infamously rough playable demo at Gamescom 2025 — where journalists described portions running at 15 frames per second — forced a formal delay and over a year of intensive performance work.
How the Performance Problem Got Fixed
The core issue was never the Switch 2’s graphics hardware. The console’s Nvidia Ampere GPU, which provides 3.072 teraflops of compute power when docked and supports DLSS 3.1 upscaling, is capable enough — Cyberpunk 2077 had already proven that. The bottleneck was the CPU. Elden Ring’s engine had only ever run on x86 processors, and converting it to run on the Switch 2’s custom 8-core ARM chip — where only six cores are available to developers — was a first for FromSoftware’s engine, running on a chip clocked lower than a Steam Deck.
By March 2026 at GDC, the improvement was measurable. FromSoftware allowed press to record footage for the first time, and outlets reported frame rates in the 30 to 40 fps range in handheld mode. The most recent preview sessions conducted ahead of the August 28 launch have described performance concerns as effectively a thing of the past, with a stable 30fps target confirmed for both docked and handheld modes.
What the Tarnished Edition Includes and How Much It Costs
The Switch 2 package contains the full base game, the acclaimed Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, a new armour set, Torrent cosmetic customisation, and two brand-new starting classes exclusive to this edition — the Heavy Knight and the Idus Knight. The price is $79.99, making it one of the pricier Switch 2 releases — but the sheer volume of content included makes the value proposition reasonable. Players who already own Elden Ring on other platforms can purchase the Tarnished Pack separately for around $5, which brings the new classes, armour, and cosmetics to PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC on August 28 as well.
