Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta Has Concluded — Here’s What Players Thought

The Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta is now over, and the community verdict is in. The Coalition ran two separate testing windows — an Early Access period from August 6 to 10 for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers and pre-order holders, followed by a General Open Beta from August 13 to 17 open to all players on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam. With the game’s full launch set for October 6, 2026, the beta served as the first hands-on preview of a franchise that hasn’t had a mainline entry since Gears 5 in 2019.

What the Beta Included

Both weekends featured the same content: a reworked version of the classic Horde mode, now called Horde Siege, and a refined 4v4 Versus mode for competitive play. Horde Siege retains the wave-based survival format of previous entries while restructuring how fortifications are built and defended — players now have more active roles in holding perimeter positions rather than purely building static defences. The 4v4 Versus mode trimmed down from the traditional 5v5 Gears format, focusing on tighter, more intense exchanges that reward positioning and cover discipline more than ever before.

The beta ran on a build described as representative of the Day 1 experience, with The Coalition explicitly stating they would use the feedback gathered from both weekends to make final adjustments before launch. PC players needed around 80GB of SSD space for the beta client and were recommended to install updated GPU drivers — NVIDIA 610.74 or above — before jumping in.

Community Reaction

Responses have been largely positive, with veteran Gears players praising the return to a grittier, darker tone compared to Gears 5’s more colourful aesthetic. The prequel setting — E-Day follows Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago before the events of the original Gears of War — has been praised for giving the story genuine emotional stakes. Some players noted that the Horde Siege mode’s early waves felt too straightforward, though the consensus was that difficulty scaling across the full game should address this. The October 6 launch is now firmly in the community’s sights.
